New alcohol rate for all types of drivers
The first change concerns the drivers to whom the measure applies. From now on, the new alcohol rate will apply to all drivers, not just professional drivers or new drivers.
The rate of alcohol for drivers has not been touched in Spain for the last 35 years. So far, the rate of alcohol in both blood and air was higher for all types of drivers, with the exception of novels and professionals. Since the amendment to the Circulation Regulation is approved, the rate will be the same for all types of drivers.
New rate of 0.2 gr / l in blood
Another new feature of the measure is the new alcohol rate or its new limit: 0.2 grams per litre of blood (before 0.5 gr / l) or 0.1 mg / l in spirated air (so far 0.25 mg / l).

Why now the change
As we told you before, the limits of alcohol for drivers have not been touched for 35 years and that is too long. Above all, if we take into account that in 2023, 29% of the accidents occurred with alcohol as the main cause.
This tightening of the alcohol limits is a response to the growing concern for road sinuestrality and the clear objective of the DGT to approach zero alcohol tolerance in driving. This new alcohol rate is expected to reduce traffic accidents.
