You know what it is? This is a new European regulation that limits CO2 emissions from new cars. Don't miss this article where we tell you everything you need to know about it.
What is CAFE regulation?
The CAFE regulations (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) is a European regulation that sets strict limits on the average carbon dioxide (CO) emissions that car manufacturers can issue with their new fleet of vehicles. Its main objective is to reduce pollutant emissions and promote the adoption of more efficient and sustainable vehicles.
1. Emissions and fines limits
CAFE has entered into force on 1 January 2025 and provides that average emissions of CO from new vehicles sold in the European Union should not exceed 93.6 grams per kilometre, which represents a 19% reduction from the previous limit of 116 g / km. Manufacturers who do not meet this limit will face fines of EUR 95 per gram of CO, which could result in multi-million-dollar sanctions for brands that do not meet these standards.
2. Impact on manufacturers and the market
The implementation of this regulation is a major challenge for the European automotive industry. Manufacturers should accelerate the electrification of their fleets and improve the efficiency of internal combustion engines to meet the new emission limits. It is estimated that, if the objectives set are not met, the fines could increase to EUR 15 billion in 2025. In addition, there is a possibility that manufacturers may choose to reduce the production of combustion vehicles to avoid sanctions, which could affect factories and jobs across Europe.
Strategies to comply with CAFE standards
To adapt to CAFE standards, manufacturers are implementing various strategies:
- Increase in the Production of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles: To increase the supply of vehicles with low or zero emissions to reduce the average CO-in-fleet.
- Development of More Efficient Technologies: Improve the efficiency of internal combustion engines and adopt technologies such as light hybriding.
- Purchase of Emissions Credits: To acquire emission credits from manufacturers that exceed the targets, such as Tesla, to compensate for the excess of CO.
- Price adjustment: Increase the price of combustion vehicles and provide incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles, thus encouraging the transition to more sustainable mobility.
CAFE is a key part of the European Union's strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. It is expected that the emission limits will become even more stringent in the future, with the aim of reducing the average emissions of CO 49.5 grams per kilometre by 2029, preparing the way for the ban on the sale of internal combustion vehicles by 2035.
In short, CAFE is a considerable challenge for the automotive industry, but also an opportunity to innovate and lead the transition to cleaner and more sustainable mobility.
