When you're going to take a carsharing or motosharing vehicle, it's very easy for some doubts to arise. In this article, we try to clarify the most common ones.

16 more common questions about carsharing and motosharing

The collaborative economy in transport is here to stay. The rental cars for minutes have been located mainly in the large cities (Madrid and Barcelona), while the motorcycles already reach more locations. Whether you are already registered in any application or a newcomer, there are doubts about the carsharing that always end up coming up and we want to respond.

These are the more common questions about motosharing and carsharing and their answers.

1.- How does carsharing and motosharing work?

There are different carsharing brands and each has its own particularities, but in general terms all work in a similar way. To be able to access the service is necessary download the app and release as a user. The data you will be asked for include your ID and your driver's license, as well as a means of payment. With most applications it will be enough to upload an image of these documents to start using it.

From there, every time you want to get a car, you just have to open the application, locate the nearest car, book it (it's usually 15 to 20 minutes of margin), ride, drive to wherever you want and when you get to the destination, park it and end the journey.

The motosharing works the same way. In addition, all motorcycles include two helmets so you don't have to worry about safety. Its main advantage is that, like everything related to motorcycles, they have more affordable prices.

2. Are all carsharing companies equal?

Not at all. Although most carsharing marks work in a similar way, there are differences between them. These distinctions focus mainly on the price of the service, the models of electric cars and motorcycles and the service areas, that is, where you can move and, above all, park the vehicle.

3.- What should be set to choose carsharing or motosharing marks?

The three elements we have already mentioned are important, but they are far from the only ones to take into account. This is what you should value to release in a vehicle app for a shared minute.

  • Service price. They are similar although there are differences. At this point it is important that you look at the price per minute, but also that you review the additional penalties and charges that can apply to you.
  • Vehicle. In the case of carsharing cars there are from the 2-seater Smart to the 5-seater Smart with more or less large trunk. In motosharing motorcycles there are also differences in performance and design.
  • Zone of influence. The majority again work at the centre of the cities, but from that point on there are those who also reach the suburbs.
  • Fleet available. The number of vehicles matters, as if the fleet is small it will cost you to find a car or a motorbike available. A good way to choose carsharing is to look at the cars you see in your neighborhood or near work.
  • The Sure.. All cars and motorcycles that travel in Spain have to be insured without exception, including carsharing and motosharing. As far as every insurance gets, it's important, especially on motorcycles. We'll give you more details later.
  • The booking app. It's important that you feel comfortable with the app. They are not all the same or have the same benefits.

4.- How far can I drive with the carsharing car?

The area of influence of each brand is different, but all will allow you to drive wherever and as far as you want. What matters to companies in the sector is not how far you go, but where the journey ends. (there are exceptions). In other words, you have to park the car or the bike inside the influence zone if you don't want to be punished.

5.- Can I leave the car parked out of the area and then take it back?

There are substantial differences here, though Most of them will let you do it. That's right. during that time you will have to keep paying for the vehicle as if you were using it, since you can't finish a trip out of the company area.

In the market there are already companies that have responded to this problem for carsharing users and offer reduced rates for the time the car is on stand by. I mean, that period from the time you park it until you use it again still counts, but at a lower price than you pay while driving.

6.- If I'm in a jam I pay the same price per minute?

Carsharing companies do not differentiate billing periods by vehicle speed. If you take the car to go downtown and you get stuck you'll pay the same rate.

The same happens if you leave the car parked and want to use it later, you'll pay for that time as if you were driving unless the company has a special fee.

7.- How long can I be with the car?

These vehicles are designed for use for minutes but there are some brands that have rates for hours and even days.

8. How long does the battery last?

Each model has its own features, but more important than the battery in general is to know if it will give you to make the trip and not leave the car 'dry'. And if you leave the vehicle unloaded, the company can punish you.

Most carsharing companies care for the state of the battery and its level of load. As an example, Emov blocks the possibility of taking any vehicle with the battery below 20%. This same policy would be the one you should follow before you ride. If the battery doesn't reach 20%, we recommend you take another one.

9.- What if I have an accident with the carsharing car or the motosharing bike?

In case of an accident the first is to follow the usual recommendations.
